Cycling and nature
A smooth and picturesque path is a welcome sight and all the more so if you are on a bicycle.
If you pedal at a leisurely pace you get to see different activities like children participating in games
While passing a tennis court, I saw these balls strewn on the court and thought the second picture would be a good one as an advertisement shot for the ball manufacturer. (I did not put it there)
The changing colours of the trees is another sight especially if you are around at the right time of the spring season.
After crossing this narrow bridge I noticed many red winged black bird in the bulrushes.
If you are lucky (and have some patience) you can capture them having a quick bath in a rivulet, as can be seen in the video.
Saw this Grackle on a tree. The common Grackle has a iridescent appearance on their head, especially males. They spread their fantail when making their bird call.
While observing the aves on the tree top, don't miss to appreciate the yellow carpet along the sidewalk.
Obeying the traffic rules applies to cyclists too.
One last shot of nature...... the green against the blue sky
Recorded my 11 km ride on Strava. To my surprise I found that Strava works even without a net connection. Great.

The Cardinal tweets
Happened to be in Columbus (Ohio) for three days and spotted a Northern Cardinal on the very first day (a first for me)
I just managed to click one shot and he flew away.
On the third day when it was time for us to leave Ohio, one of them made a special appearance for me and was even ready to sing for me. I quickly managed to capture her performance with a hand held camera (so you will have to excuse the slight shake in the video)
It is said that both the male and the female sings together while nesting.Northern Cardinals live for about 13 to15 years which is pretty impressive for a bird.
They are the state bird of seven states. Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, North Virginia and North Carolina. The airbnb that we stayed in, was located in an Italian community, and it was a peaceful place.
The green and red leaves formed a good canopy for the house
It was good to see early morning joggers passing by waving out with a smile.
I even spotted a vintage car parked in front of a house.
There is a Roman Catholic church (St John the Baptist) within walking distance and we could attend the Sunday morning service at this church.
It is said that this church is more than a century old and functioned as a hub for the Italian speaking community who migrated here. A sketch of the church when it was built in 1898
The previous day when I passed by the church, a wedding just got over and the photo session was in progress.
On Sunday evening we went to the topiary park. The topiary figures are several varieties of Taxus, commonly known as yews.
The figures are trimmed and tied each June after their main flush of growth.
They are also trimmed through the summer to maintain their appearance. The beautiful gardens filled with perennials and annuals are planted and maintained by volunteers of the Friends of the topiary park.
If you are near the Convention Center, don't miss the bronze sculpture of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Before leaving that area we made a stopover at Jeni's for icecream
Had to wait in line for about 15 minutes but it was worth the wait.
The cones are hot and crisp, maybe because it is made right there in front of you.
Among the famous quotes, here is one from Clark Gable "I am just a lucky slob from Ohio who happened to be in the right place at the right time"

River walk and Urban Sketchers
Took part in a River walk last week conducted by Jeevitnadi, and it was good that I did it.
I mean, it's been almost five decades since I have been in Pune but knew very little about the rivers of Pune. So it took some time for me to digest the fact that the river Mutha was a crore years old. Madam Shailaja (who conducted the walk) casually pointed to a rock next to the river and said that those rocks were about 6.5 crore years old, the age of Sahyadris. (Basalt formation period)
Talking about Mutha, it is supposed to be older than the rivers originating from the Himalayas, as Sahyadiri is older than the Himalaya. Another fact that I did not know was that the Mutha joins Krishna river and finally flows into the Bay of Bengal (due to the topography of India)
For those who want to know the origin, the Mutha starts from a small village named Vegare (not far from Lavasa)
While the river walk was going on, some of the members of the Urban sketchers joined in and were listening as well as sketching.
While others were sketching the Siddheshwar temple which happened to be the point of common interest for both.
Above sketch by Shirish Deshpande
Fossils of elephants and Aurochs were found on the banks of Mutha. Auroch is a type of large wild cattle (now extinct) and was the ancestor of the present domestic cattle.
The mandatory group picture
Coming back to the river walk, while we were moving around I could get a very bad stench and the water was looking really black while I tried to click some pictures of the birds.
Madam Shailaja mentioned that this river had been once rich with flora and fauna. For example, the Pied Kingfisher (कवड्या in Marathi) is known to hover over the water and with a quick dive catch its fish. But with the present state of water being murky and turbid the pied kingfisher is no longer seen on this river
The same is the case with the River Turn ( नदी सूरय in Marathi) This species has been uplisted to Near Threatened on the basis that increasing human disturbance and dam construction projects are expected to drive a moderately rapid population decline over the next three generations.
To quote one more example is the Pheasant tailed Jacana (कमलपक्षी in Marathi). They are seen on floating vegetation and the nest is usually on a leaf which floats, (mostly lotus leaf). In the absence of such vegetation, this bird is no more seen on the Mutha banks.
The River Tern creating a figure of '7' "Always a treat watching these hunt over the Panshet Dam in Pune" says Anupam who painted this.
The rivers were well taken care of during the previous era. The Kumbharves dam built during the Peshwe era marked the boundary of the then Pune. Later rebuilt by the British, it still stands under the Dengale bridge at Kumbharvada
One way to create awareness is to encourage others to attend these river walks. I have made a short one minute video of the walk I had.
There are some proposals in the pipeline, like this present state near the Shivaji bridge to be transformed into an activity area without disturbing the ecological balance.
Like the saying goes, "we have not inherited this world from our parents, we have borrowed it from our children"

Barbet and its nest
It is really interesting to see how these small birds coexist with each other. I was watching this pair of Coppersmith Barbet building their nest and in the process saw many other birds on the same tree.
I also observed that the Barbet had a set routine during the day. At the crack of dawn he sits on the eucalyptus tree close to our house emitting his tuk tuk sound. Once he moves on, the Mynahs parks themselves on the tree creating a lot of racket. Then comes the sunbirds flitting around pretty fast, followed by the fan tail with their peculiar tweet. Once the sun is real bright, the pair of grey hornbills do make their presence felt.
More like a fixed time slot for each bird. The Barbet does not get distracted by the other activities on the tree, like the parrot feeding the young one.
Or the male koel sitting on the same bark where he is chipping away the wood for the nest.
Earlier he started on the east side and went pretty deep with the hole, but abandoned it. Could be the wood was hard, or could be that the sunlight would hit the young one directly.
Have made a small video with whatever I could capture. Now the Barbet is working on the west side, away from my line of visibility. If I can capture some action from the other side, then maybe I may come up with part 2 of this video. We can name it West Side Story.
