Fun day for kids

Capturing pictures when the subject is in motion is a challenge. I managed to get a few during the relay of the annual sports day of Little Angels School. 

Sports day is fun especially for the kids. This is the third sports day of this school that I am attending (two in Pune and one in Mumbai)  Every time I get to learn something new and last week was no exception.

The house captains along with their Sir, making a final inspection of the ground before the start of the event.

The march past was perfect with children marching to the tune of Col Bogey’s march . 

The Blue House won the trophy for the best team in the march past. You can see it in the video.  

The Lezim dance performed by the senior boys was worth watching. I can imagine the amount of practice that has gone into it.  

There was this boy Nishant Pai  from yellow house who helped the guest (Ms Purvi Shah) to put the medal over his head, then he helped her to put the medal over the boy who stood second, and then again he went on to help her do the same with the guy who stood third. It was such a spontaneous gesture that it won the hearts of all who were present there.  

Nikki Rita who won the Gold medal for the Inter Competition for Mumbai Rifle shooting  was felicitated by Ms Priya Dutt.

The last item on the agenda was for the parents, namely tug of war between the husbands and the wives. The result? Well let me say it was a draw.

School Activities

That is a look of pure admiration. May be its because his friend successfully completed the painting task given to him. 

Had been to Little Angels School (Mumbai) a couple of days ago where there was a flurry of activities going on.  In the class where Fun with colours was held, it was literally that – Fun with colours. 

The children keenly listened to the instructions given by the teachers and then proceeded to do exactly what was told.

The concentration of trying to accomplish the given task was very much visible on their faces. 

In the academics it was cooking activities, where some had to make Cake Pops while others had to make cup cookies. Crumbling the cake for making the Cake Pops was something everyone enjoyed 

I liked the way the seniors helped out the younger ones in their activities. 

They also loved to pose with the product that they made. (some even liked to taste them)

There was a section for Tangorli where the kids mixed their own drinks 

Making cookies was another challenge.

In some other classes there was this fine motor activity taking place. 

This girl was really happy whenever she could pick up a coloured ball and put it in the shimmery water.  

This little boy was cheered and encouraged whenever he could successfully  put a ball in the bottle through the hole in the side.

I saw this in one of the classes and was reminded of my school days. My job was exactly what Samiksha did.

At the end of the session I heard one student telling his teacher “Miss I had lots of fun today” And I think that sums up everything. 

Open Day in Pune school

Had the privilege to be in Little Angels school in Pune during the open day 

It was nice to see the parents trickling in one by one, meeting the staff, and being handed over their kid’s progress report for the semester. 

I had a glance at some of the answer sheets while a parent was going through it. 

A good and simple way of testing children having ADD and ADHD. 

I found Mr Jehangir, (the founder of Little Angels) greeting every parent and chatting with them. 

At the venue, there was an exhibition cum sale of the items made by these children (organized by “Kalanidhi”)

Most of the items were pertaining to Diwali, as the festive season was round the corner.

Some of the kids were keenly inspecting the exhibited items

while others preferred to try out their regular activity in school, or pose for me.

While the parents were busy, I engaged Mr Jehangir in a conversation, asking him how he came up with the idea of opening a school like this. He said that he was a flight purser in Gulf air and was also helping his father in running their eatery in Colaba.

Once he happened to visit an exhibition run by Dilkush, a school for mentally challenged children. Very soon he found himself getting enrolled for a training program for teaching special kids. A male special educator was unheard of in those days. It was a tough battle for him at every step.

After completing the course he approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Maybe his grit and determination helped him in procuring some land from BMC at Bandra and that is how the first school of Little Angels came up in 2004.

He said his biggest challenge was to convince the parents that these children need to go to a special school where they are given vocational training.

Most of the parents are just worried about their children getting “proper education”  

According to Jehangir “These are children who have normal and sometimes very high IQ, but who have to be taught differently. They can read, write and some can do very complex mathematics” I was suddenly reminded of Dustin Hoffman’s role in the 1988 movie “Rainman”.

Coming back to the exhibition, one of the items on display was this oil free pickle and I picked it up immediately as I recollected reading about consuming oil free food for good health. The bottle could not have come at a better time
