It is very
rare that one gets to see the Diamond Anniversary of a couple and I had the opportunity
to capture the same on video last week.
Had a lunch
party for the couple (my in laws) on our terrace and invited some close friends
who were in town. Even though the guest list was not a small one(29), we
decided to cook all the food at home (including baking the birthday cake)
The menu for
the lunch was Kerala Chicken curry, Cabbage thoran, Pineapple pachadi, Sambhar,
Pork roast and fish curry.
All enjoyed
the Appam and there were hardly any takers for rice.
The moluku
idichu varatha pappadam was a novelty for many and they wanted to know how it was
made.
All were
tickled by the “Yesterday’s fish curry” and one even jokingly commented “don’t tell
me you are giving us leftovers”
I had to
finally show them the recipe book in which it was named as “Yesterday’s fish
curry”
As the
recipe says these fish curries taste better the next day and is served a day
after it is cooked. Good that we made two chattis of fish curry as it needed
constant replenishing. (chatti is the earthen pot in which it is cooked and
served)
For desert
we had parippu payasam, another sweet delicacy from Kerala.
The cake (Dulche
De Leche Pound Cake) got over within no time as some went in for a second
helping. We could not get the flaked almonds in any of the nearby stores, so
soaked some almonds overnight and sliced them fine to garnish the cake.
The
highlight was the couple cutting the cake and feeding each other
You can see
how they looked 60 years ago in the attached video.

Bikram's
That's wonderful!Wishing them many more years together.
Flaked almonds you may get at Dorabjee's. Can I get to buy the chatti in Pune?
I don't think we can get the chatti in Pune Sharmila. We got ours from Kerala.
Yes we came to know later about the availability in Dorabjee's.
It is impossible to wait for a Diamond Jubilee occasion to grab this fantastic menu you have laid out.
Folks who expressed reservation about yesterday's day's fish curry are not aware of the taste of the "pazankoottan" that is Kerala's traditional staple . Long dead I suppose.Pazhankoottan .
Happy , healthy life ahead for the couple. Indeed unique to be together this long and healthy.
They make my heart sing.
60 years is amazing! I'm at 40 years married, but then it has taken 3 wives so not quite the same thing.
Looks like they are still going strong.

I was so pleased to find your comment on my blog as now I have visited yours and found so many things of interest. I did visit Mumbai as it was when called Bombay and it is one of my happiest memories .. The markets. Monkey island.. Everything there is so vibrant with colour. Which many of your photos show well. Nice to find your blog. Betty.

Truly something to celebrate. Good health to them. You did a lovely job of making a memorial of their anniversary.
Your terrace is lovely. The party seemed pefect... good food, people, and fun! I watched parts of the video to get even more of a feel. Congratulations to your in-laws. How old were they when they married? Was it an arranged marriage? Feeding each other cake - how special!
Happy New Year to You and Your Family!
I meant to also say how impressed I am that you cooked the food! It looks delicious. I've had the pleasure of eating at the home of a friend of mine from India for years and love some of her specialties.

Wow. That must have been a really special party.
What a feast and kudos to your in-laws! Lois Anne and I will make 58 years this June so we're hoping to make it our Diamond Anniversary. And thanks much for your fine comment on Creative Confections! It means a lot when someone "gets" my poetry!
awww! such sweetness.. :)
p.s. : food is positively drool-worthy!
Sweet couple!
Guess what, in my house whenever 'yesterday's fish curry' is made in our prized black meen chatti, it nearly never survives to see the next day, so we've been forced to call it 'today's fish curry' all along.
Nice post, things explained in details. Thank You.
Oh! Yum yum yum.
